Cost of living in Lithuania

Students and parents ask this more than anything else: "what does a year actually cost?" The calculator below lets you build an estimate around your own situation.

These are your figures, not a price list

The calculator is not a fixed tariff. You set each line yourself. Tuition should be checked on the university's own page and rent against current listings — both change every year and differ by school.

TuitionAnnual fee. Varies by programme and university; check the exact figure on the school's official page.
€4,000
AccommodationA dormitory is usually cheaper; a shared flat can be reasonable. Yearly total.
€3,000
Food and groceriesThe line that moves most, depending on how often you cook at home.
€2,400
TransportDiscounted student monthly pass plus the occasional intercity trip.
€300
Phone, internet, personalSIM, subscriptions, clothes, social life and the unexpected.
€1,200
Estimated yearly total €10,900 About €908 per month

This estimate rests only on the values you entered and is not a price commitment. Real figures vary by university, city, accommodation type and spending habits. Visa and residence permit fees, health insurance, flights and one-off setup costs (deposit, furniture, first shop) are not in this table — budget for those separately. The monthly figure is the yearly total divided by twelve; tuition is usually paid once or twice a year, so your monthly cash need is lower than that. To build your own budget from scratch, see the budget article in the Student Guide.

What drives the budget

Why two students on the same programme spend differently

1

City

Vilnius is generally pricier than Kaunas and Klaipėda, and rent is where you feel it.

2

Accommodation type

Dormitory, shared flat or a place of your own — the single biggest variable in a yearly budget.

3

Programme

Health and engineering programmes usually carry higher tuition than social sciences.

4

Eating habits

Cooking at home versus eating out can be worth several thousand euros a year.

5

Heating season

Heating costs rise noticeably in winter. If rent is not "bills included", budget for it.

6

One-off costs

Deposit, furniture, the first big shop and the flight — your first month never looks like the others.

Let's talk about your budget

If the figure above is higher than you can manage, there may be more affordable programmes and cities in the same field. In the free eligibility analysis we work out the options that fit your budget.
